Day 5 - l'essentiel et le tracteur Monsieur Clarkson !

The nice thing about staying on these campervan carpark stops (Aires) rather than 'proper' campsites is that you get a 24hr ticket so no mad dash in the morning to get up and out. As the weather was half decent, we took a walk down the canal into the village of Coulon to have a look around. 
Apart from the bakery, Coop and chemist the village has jumped on the 100 pitch motorhome park, as you would expect, and now boasts at least a dozen restaurants and cafés, 4 souvenir shops and an army of student types to slowly propell you along the canal in punts, 6 at a time, €20 per person for 1hr. No thanks. My attention was else where. 
Never miss an opportunity to stock up on essentials, I always say as you never know if you might run out. Straight to the bakery and Coop it was then to get some fresh bread and a bottle of red for the evening meal.
       The plan today was to head sort of south east'ly and get into the next big green patch on the road atlas, again sticking to the 'B' roads. 
After lunch opposite another abbey      (Abbaye Royale de Celles sur Belle)  this time with a very impressive bug house , we got back on the farm roads.
 
Thats the problem with farm roads; you get farm vehicles on them 😖. Not just any old farm vehicle, oh no, this was a Jeremey Clarkson style 'Mega' tractor pulling something almost as big and limited to 25km/hr ...or 15.5mph in old money (he was actually doing about 20mph,naughty boy) 
     For almost 5 miles we crawled along behind this monster; he even had to go into the ditch a time or two just to let on coming cars get past it.
Eventually our chance came and Jill floored it and we managed to get past. We then got stuck behind cyclists but I suppose thats to be expected, as they never have anything better to do on a Saturday, no matter what the nationality 😋.
     We made it to the big green bit on the road atlas and then followed one of the marked, green, scenic roads which actually was quite nice. We were heading for a campervan stop, by a river, at the bottom of the green area, next to a little town called Bourdeilles , which, has a couple of castles, so we might stay 2 nights and have a wander round 🤗

Journey to the center of the earth 🔦  .... and new sticker day ! As recommended, today was going underground day. The  Gouffre de Padirac  is the huge entrance to a natural opening approximately 115 feet in diameter and 250 feet deep. It is one of the largest chasms in Europe. Day 27 - Peep ! Peep ! tous à bord 🚂

Peep! Peep! all aboard 🚂  We slept well despite the threat of earthquakes according to the signs in the toilet block 🫨. No time to dawdle this morning, we had a schedule to keep too; well the train did. It was sunday and it was steam train day 🤗. Oooo, we do like a stream train; the nostalgia, the engineering, the sounds and the smell!      The Cevennes Steam Train runs 13km from Anduze in the Cevennes mountains to Saint Jean du Gard along the Gardon valley. The steam train runs every other day during the week and every day at weekends from June onwards. The train winds its way thru tunnels and over bridges crossing the rivers below, pulling old open sided carriages so you can lean out at your peril to admire the superb views below. 4 stream trains and 1 diesel are in regular use; all living at Saint Jean-du-Gard , together with all the carriages and other assorted rolling stock. Day 12 - Une journée au bord du lac

A day by the lake - Lac de Génos, Loudenvielle. At just over 3000 feet the lake just outside Loudenvielle is a populare destination for not only tourists but locals from all the surrounding regions. Our journey took us back along some of the roads we had recently travelled, this time hugging the rock walls thru the gorges under the protective canopy's of steel netting to protect us from falling rocks, dislodged by the recent rain. It wasn't long till we were down from the mountain's, running along the edge of the Pyrenees only to turn back up into them again for the next valley. That's the way it goes with landscape like this . With the snow capped peaks that overshadow our destination in sight, we started to wind our way up, thru little villages, once again.
